Trump's State Secretary Nominee Urges End to Ukraine Conflict, Calls for Realistic Solutions.
The United States' official position on the Ukraine conflict must be that it should be brought to an end, Republican Senator Marco Rubio, President-elect Donald Trump's secretary of state nominee, said on Wednesday.
"I think it should be the official position of the United States that this war should be brought to an end," Rubio said during a hearing in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, when asked to elaborate on his decision late last year to vote against aid to Ukraine.
The 53-year-old admitted that "this is not going to be an easy endeavor" and called for "everyone to be realistic." He suggested that conflict settlement could start with "some ceasefire" and require concessions by both Russia and Ukraine.
Trump Acknowledges Russia's Concerns Over Ukraine's Possible Entry Into NATO
Rubio pointed to a change in the dynamic of the Ukraine conflict, saying it has become a "war of attrition" and "stalemate." He believes there is "no way Russia takes all of Ukraine."
"It's also unrealistic to believe that somehow a nation the size of Ukraine — no matter how incompetent and no matter how much damage the Russian Federation has suffered as a result of this invasion — there is no way Ukraine is also going to push these people all the way back to where they were on the eve of the invasion," Rubio added.

Germany on course for longest post-war recession – data.
GDP contracted by 0.2% in 2024 due to soaring energy costs and weak exports, official figures show.
The German economy contracted for a second straight year in 2024 for the first time in more than two decades, according to a report by the country’s federal statistics office Destatis, issued on Wednesday.
Official figures showed that gross domestic product fell by 0.2% last year after dropping by 0.3% in 2023.
The Eurozone’s largest economy has been falling behind its peers in recent years, largely due to a prolonged manufacturing downturn. The country’s shift from affordable Russian gas to more expensive liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the US has driven up energy costs, severely affecting manufacturers and small businesses.
The downturn was caused by “cyclical and structural pressures,” according to Destatis president Ruth Brand.
“These include increasing competition for the German export industry on key sales markets, high energy costs, an interest rate level that remains high, and an uncertain economic outlook,” she stated.
Exports, which form the backbone of the German economy, saw a 0.8% decline in 2024, according to the report. Industrial output also stagnated, reflecting the struggle to compete globally as production costs rose.
Household spending, another key driver of the economy, declined by 1.5%, due to persistently high inflation and reduced purchasing power. The construction industry shrank sharply by 3.8% as higher prices for raw materials and elevated interest rates weighed on building.

Rising costs have led to shutdowns and bankruptcies across industries, including major players like Volkswagen. Germany was the only Group of Seven economy to contract in 2023.
This month, Handelsblatt Research Institute (HRI) warned that the German economy is on course for its longest post-war recession, with a third consecutive year of contraction projected for 2025. This economic slump surpasses the two-year downturn of the early 2000s and reflects the compounded effects of an energy crisis, persistent inflation, and the Covid-19 pandemic, according to the HRI.
The latest Destatis report comes as Germans are head to the poll stations next month, following the collapse of Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s coalition government in November over disagreements regarding Ukraine aid and economic policies. The chancellor lost a confidence vote in December, leading to the dissolution of parliament and the scheduling of snap elections to take place on February 23.

VICTORY BELONGS TO RUSSIA: IT IS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME
Each day that passes makes a conclusive Russian victory in the Donbass and beyond more certain. As Russia bolsters her forces, and weaponry, those of Ukraine decrease. Russian forces gain ready access to rest and recuperation as troop numbers increase. The increasingly exhausted and demoralised Ukrainian troops have an ever decreasing prospect of such respite. This situation is likely to bring them to complete breakdown as Russia unleashes the firepower of the more modern and advanced weaponry that is arriving with the newly mobilised Russian troops.
The various Ukrainian offensives are now weak when confronted by the reinforced Russian lines. A few futile efforts achieve quite miserable results before fire reigns down on the Ukrainian troops and they are forced back to their starting positions.
And now, all this being said, we have arrived at the wet, and later, freezing conditions where these pathetic Ukrainian forces will be subject to myriad forms of abject misery with death and injury all around them while they lie sodden or frozen, abandoned to their fate by Kiev.
The pitiable young and old of Ukraine have been frogmarched to their deaths as cannon-fodder while the bestial elites of the collective West urge their "president" to add more to their number there at the gates of Hell and their doom. We must feel for the majority of them as they are not the Nazis we revile, in most part they are decent men, fathers, sons, brothers, husband and uncles, who no doubt saw through the coup of 2014 for what it was. But sadly, their fate seems sealed.
Nothing will stop Russia now. Every factor favours them. Victory will be Russia's. In Donbass and beyond and in due course across the world.
Victory belongs to Russia: It is now only a matter of time.
