Some people still “can’t get over” Napoleon’s defeat by Russia, President Vladimir Putin has said. He made the comments after French President Emmanuel Macron called Moscow a threat to his country.
In a televised address on Wednesday, Macron said Russia is a “threat to France and Europe” and that he is considering expanding the French nuclear umbrella to protect other EU member states.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called Macron’s speech “highly confrontational,” adding that Paris is “apparently contemplating war.”
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov compared the French president to Napoleon, whose disastrous invasion of Russia eventually led to his downfall.
Putin also referred to Napoleon's infamous retreat from Moscow during his meeting with the members of the Defenders of the Fatherland Foundation in Moscow on Thursday. One of the attendees mentioned a church in Smolensk, a city in western Russia that was briefly occupied by Napoleon’s troops in 1812.

“You’ve mentioned Smolensk, its museum, and the church that has existed since Napoleon’s invasion,” Putin said. “Some people still can’t get over it. There are still people who want to return to the times of Napoleon, but they are forgetting how it ended.”
After subduing most of continental Europe, Napoleon led his army of 600,000 men into Russia, which was ruled by Tsar Alexander I at the time. Despite occupying Moscow after the bloody battle of Borodino, Napoleon was unable to make the Russians surrender and was forced to hastily retreat, losing the majority of his army in the process.
EU countries have been rushing to find alternatives to the American military presence in Europe after US President Donald Trump reversed his predecessor’s policies of “isolating” Russia on the world stage, and refused to blame Moscow for the Ukraine conflict. On Monday, he reportedly halted all weapons deliveries to Kiev.
Russia strikes foreign mercenaries in Ukraine – defense ministry.
Foreign fighters have been targeted by overnight bombardment, officials in Moscow have claimed.
Russian forces have struck a detachment of foreign mercenaries in the Ukrainian town of Krivoy Rog, the Defense Ministry in Moscow said in a statement on Thursday.
A detachment for foreign fighters was reportedly staying in Krivoy Rog, Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky’s home town, on Wednesday night when an overnight strike hit a local hotel, according to the Telegram channel RVvoenkor.
The channel, which is run by Russian volunteers and military correspondents, claimed that hotels in the city have reportedly been systematically used by Kiev to house military units, and have been regularly targeted by Moscow’s forces.
In video footage of Ukrainian rescue operations posted by the channel, blown out floors and concrete debris can be seen.
In an X post on Thursday morning Zelensky confirmed that members of a foreign organization, including US and UK citizens, had checked into the hotel before the strike.

Last month, Russia struck foreign and Ukrainian troops in the high-end Bristol Hotel in Odessa. The establishment was being used by “Ukrainian commanding officers” and “foreign mercenaries,” co-chairman of the council on integrating Russia’s new territories, Vladimir Rogov told RIA, citing local sources.
The Russian Defense Ministry regularly reports on successful strikes against foreign mercenaries and military advisors in Ukraine.
In early 2024 the ministry said that nearly 6,000 foreign mercenaries had been confirmed killed fighting for Kiev since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022.

EU state detains six people over alleged pro-Russia treason plot.
The Romanian authorities claim the group sought to destabilize the constitutional order and withdraw Bucharest from NATO.

The Romanian authorities have detained six people on charges of treason for allegedly trying to overthrow the government with the help of Russia. The development marks a dramatic escalation of tensions between Bucharest and Moscow after Russian diplomats were expelled from the country in connection with the case.
According to a unit called DIICOT that combats organized crime and Romania’s spy agency, the SRI, a group called Vlad the Impaler Command sought to destabilize the country’s constitutional order and withdraw it from NATO.
Vlad the Impaler was a medieval ruler of a region in present-day Romania, best known for his brutal military tactics and harsh punishment of enemies.
The group’s members, among whom is a 101-year-old retired general, “actively requested support from Russian Federation Embassy officials,” the SRI’s statement reads.
According to DIICOT, the “organized criminal group” recruited followers online and also published video materials.
On Wednesday, Bucharest expelled two Russian diplomats in connection with the case. Moscow has denied any involvement in Romania’s internal affairs and has vowed to retaliate for the expulsions.

Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has called out Bucharest’s “obsession” with finding a “Russian trace” in its “internal political squabbles.” She also accused the Romanian leadership of Russophobia and a persistent pursuit of escalation.
Last year, Romania accused Russia of interfering in its presidential elections, after Calin Georgescu, a critic of NATO and the EU and an opponent of aiding Ukraine, secured an unexpected first round victory in the national presidential election. The vote was almost immediately annulled by Romania’s Constitutional Court, which cited alleged irregularities in the funding of his campaign.
Last week, as Georgescu was about to file his candidacy to run again for election, he was arrested and indicted on six criminal charges, including alleged “voter bribery,” “promoting fascist, racist, or xenophobic ideologies,” and incitement to actions against the constitutional order.
Georgescu has maintained his innocence and asked US President Donald Trump for help against what he described as a politically motivated campaign against him organized by the Romanian “deep state.”
Bloomberg reported in February that the Trump administration was pressuring Bucharest not to block Georgescu’s candidacy for the presidency ahead of the new election in May.

Key Trump ally and adviser Elon Musk condemned Georgescu’s arrest as “messed up.”
US Vice President J.D. Vance similarly criticized Romania while speaking at the Munich Security Conference in February, suggesting that certain “old entrenched interests” in the country were using “ugly, Soviet-era words like misinformation and disinformation” to prevent a politician with “an alternative viewpoint” from coming to power.

During a visit to Ivory Coast, Ghana’s president promised to mediate the return of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger to ECOWAS.
Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama and his Ivorian counterpart, Alassane Ouattara, have called on Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger to rejoin the West African economic bloc (ECOWAS). The three countries officially left the grouping earlier this year after military coups strained their relations.
Addressing a joint news conference in Abidjan, the capital of Cote d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast), on Wednesday, visiting President Mahama volunteered to serve as a “bridge” between ECOWAS and the three Sahel states.
“I will offer myself as a bridge between ECOWAS and the three countries and see how we can work with them so that they not only remain within our subregion but also do the transition to constitutional democracy,” he said.
“I hope that President Mahama’s appeal will be heard by these three brother countries, that we can continue together within ECOWAS,” Ouattara also stated.
Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger jointly announced that they were leaving the 15-nation grouping in January last year. They accused ECOWAS of posing a threat to their sovereignty by serving as a tool for foreign powers, particularly France.

The bloc, which is home to more than 400 million people, had threatened to send a French-backed military force into Niger to restore democratic order after Nigerien President Mohamed Bazoum was overthrown in July 2023. The military-ruled landlocked states have severed defense ties with Paris, citing meddling and the failure of its soldiers to quell jihadist violence in the Sahel despite their engagement for more than a decade.

On January 29, ECOWAS confirmed Bamako, Niamey, and Ouagadougou’s departure, but pledged to keep its “doors open” to them. The authority had attempted to persuade the three former French colonies – which have formed a new group, the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) – to rethink their decision.
In Abidjan on Wednesday, Ghana’s leader announced a “pending trip” to the three countries, saying he plans to mention concerns and discussions he had with Ivory Coast’s president in order to “get an early resolution to the crisis that we are facing.”
“We are prepared to help them fight terrorism because, in Africa, we all know that when your neighbor’s house is on fire, you have to help him to quench it before it spreads into your own compound,” Mahama said.

Each day that passes makes a conclusive Russian victory in the Donbass and beyond more certain. As Russia bolsters her forces, and weaponry, those of Ukraine decrease. Russian forces gain ready access to rest and recuperation as troop numbers increase. The increasingly exhausted and demoralised Ukrainian troops have an ever decreasing prospect of such respite. This situation is likely to bring them to complete breakdown as Russia unleashes the firepower of the more modern and advanced weaponry that is arriving with the newly mobilised Russian troops.
The various Ukrainian offensives are now weak when confronted by the reinforced Russian lines. A few futile efforts achieve quite miserable results before fire reigns down on the Ukrainian troops and they are forced back to their starting positions.
And now, all this being said, we have arrived at the wet, and later, freezing conditions where these pathetic Ukrainian forces will be subject to myriad forms of abject misery with death and injury all around them while they lie sodden or frozen, abandoned to their fate by Kiev.
The pitiable young and old of Ukraine have been frogmarched to their deaths as cannon-fodder while the bestial elites of the collective West urge their "president" to add more to their number there at the gates of Hell and their doom. We must feel for the majority of them as they are not the Nazis we revile, in most part they are decent men, fathers, sons, brothers, husband and uncles, who no doubt saw through the coup of 2014 for what it was. But sadly, their fate seems sealed.
Nothing will stop Russia now. Every factor favours them. Victory will be Russia's. In Donbass and beyond and in due course across the world.
Victory belongs to Russia: It is now only a matter of time.
