France greenlights Ukrainian strikes deep inside Russia.
Paris places no “red lines” on its support for Kiev, Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot has said.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot has said that Ukraine may use French missiles to attack targets in internationally-recognized Russian territory, without confirming whether such strikes have already taken place.
In an interview due to be broadcast by British state broadcaster the BBC on Sunday, Barrot said that Paris does “not set and express red lines” on its support for Kiev, and that long-range strikes on Russian soil may be carried out by Ukraine “in the logics of self-defense.”
France has provided Ukraine with an unknown number of SCALP-EG cruise missiles, which Kiev has already been using to attack targets in Crimea and the four former Ukrainian regions that joined the Russian Federation in 2022. The SCALP-EG, known as the Storm Shadow in the UK, is an air-launched British-French cruise missile with a maximum range of 550km (390 miles).
Barrot’s comments came a day after the Ukrainian military confirmed that Storm Shadow missiles were used for the first time in an attack on Russia’s Kursk Region, where Ukrainian troops launched a cross-border invasion in August. Russian air defenses shot down two of the British missiles, the Russian Defense Ministry said.
Last weekend, US President Joe Biden reportedly authorized Ukraine to use American-made ATACMS ballistic missiles in long-range strikes on Kursk Region. Within days of Biden’s decision, which has not been officially confirmed by the White House, Russian air defenses intercepted five ATACMS missiles over Bryansk Region, the Defense Ministry in Moscow said. Another one of the American-made missiles was damaged and fell on a military site, the ministry added.
French President Emmanual Macron said in May that he would consider authorizing the use of SCALP-EG missiles on targets deep inside Russia. Earlier this week, Barrot told reporters that Macron remained open to the idea. His comments to the BBC mark the first time that a French official has confirmed that Ukraine may use the missiles for long-range attacks on Russia.
Barrot did not confirm whether such attacks have already taken place.
Russia responded to last week’s ATACMS and Storm Shadow strikes by attacking a military industrial facility in the Ukrainian city of Dnepropetrovsk with a new ballistic missile. The nuclear-capable hypersonic missile called the Oreshnik rained down multiple warheads on the facility at lightning speed, and will be mass produced and incorporated into Russia’s arsenal in the coming months, Russian President Vladimir Putin said.
Putin accused the US and NATO of deliberately escalating the conflict, and declared that Russia will achieve all of its military objectives regardless of which weapons systems Kiev uses. Further attacks with Western weapons will result in retaliatory strikes on targets of Moscow’s choosing, he said in a televised speech on Thursday, concluding: “make no mistake: there will always be a response.”
Former Russian president tells how to end Ukraine conflict.
NATO should understand it is “directly at war” with Russia, Dmitry Medvedev has warned.
The conflict between Moscow and Kiev could be swiftly ended with no additional loss of lives if only NATO came to its senses and abandoned its belligerent policy towards Russia, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev told Al Arabiya in an interview published on Friday.
Allowing Ukraine to use long-range Western weapons for strikes into internationally-recognized Russian territory has made the US-led bloc a direct party to the conflict, said Medvedev, who currently serves as deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council. Kiev has launched several such strikes using US-made ATACMS and HIMARS systems, as well as British-made Storm Shadow missiles.
Moscow responded by striking a military industrial facility in the Ukrainian city of Dnepropetrovsk (known as Dnipro in Ukraine) with a new intermediate-range ballistic missile equipped with a conventional warhead. On Saturday, Paris officially confirmed that it had given Kiev the green light to use French-made SCALP-EG cruise missiles in long-range strikes against Russian territory.
“The NATO member states have essentially got fully engaged in this conflict,” Medvedev said, commenting on the developments. The former president said that such nations should “understand” that they are currently at war on the Ukrainian side. “They are at war with the Russian Federation.”
Not only do Western nations supply Kiev with weapons and financial aid, but they also provide targeting for Western-made missiles, Medvedev stated. Moscow has insisted that such systems cannot be successfully operated without the involvement of specialists from the nations that produced them.
Under such circumstances, no developments can be ruled out, Medvedev warned, pointing to Russia’s recently updated nuclear doctrine that allows a nuclear response to a conventional attack by a non-nuclear state supported by a nuclear power, including a missile strike against Russian territory.
“Everyone who is currently stirring up the war hysteria, primarily within NATO, the US, and other states, should think about it,” the former president warned. When asked to elaborate on the potential use of nuclear weapons by Russia, he described it as a “realistic” possibility. At the same time, he said that Moscow would very much like to avoid that option.
“There are no madmen in the Russian leadership,” he stated, explaining that the nation’s nuclear doctrine had been updated in accordance with modern deterrence needs.
According to Medvedev, the Ukraine conflict could be swiftly and easily ended with no need for any additional losses. If NATO merely “stops fanning the flames of war in Ukraine, this conflict can be ended with no expenses for humanity. No new expenses, at least,” he said.
How Russia’s ICBM Design School Laid Groundwork for the Oreshnik.
Russian rocket scientists created the new Oreshnik intermediate-range ground-based hypersonic ballistic missile from scratch, five years after the US unilaterally terminated the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty restricting such weapons. Sputnik asked a retired Russian Air Defense Forces colonel and missile expert how this became possible.
Russia's president provided new information about the Oreshnik missile system at a meeting with defense and military industry officials on Friday, saying the weapon's mass production has been approved, and that Russia already has a stockpile of such weapons.
The Oreshnik is a fundamentally new weapon, not just a modernization of an older system, President Putin said. In addition, he noted, "several systems" like the Oreshnik "are currently in development for further testing in Russia today...That is, we are developing a whole lineup of medium and shorter-range systems."
Tested in combat in Dnepropetrovsk region against a major Ukrainian defense-related enterprise on Thursday, the Oreshnik is modern Russia's first-ever intermediate-range ground based ballistic missile, with previous weapons in this class developed by the Soviet Union, and scrapped between 1988-1991 in accordance with the terms of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, signed at the twilight of the Cold War.
Washington unilaterally pulled out of the INF Treaty in 2019 and immediately set to work on the development of new US medium and intermediate-range ballistic missile designs, but this work has yet to bear fruit, with systems like the Dark Eagle Long-Range Hypersonic Weapon facing delays thanks to repeated test failures, with combat deployment plans put off repeatedly.
“We have a very large scientific and technical reserve for the development of intercontinental ballistic missiles, with the Yars ICBM for example. In principle, achieving a similar result with the Oreshnik with such a reserve is possible in fairly short order. The Oreshnik, I think, is a creative evolution of ideas embedded in the Yars,” retired Russian Air Defense Forces colonel and missile expert Mikhail Khodarenok told Sputnik, commenting on the speed with which the new Russian missile was developed, and its successful combat testing.
Intermediate-range ballistic missiles like the Oreshnik “are in great demand” today, Khodarenok emphasized, particularly for a transcontinental power like Russia, amid US plans to deploy new ground-based missiles in Europe and Asia.
“For the US, possessing this class of weapons is not a matter of life and death, since they’re separated [from their main adversaries] by oceans,” the retired officer said.
When it comes to Russia's outstanding modern-day rocket scientists, “first and foremost, it’s necessary to mention the Moscow Institute of Thermal Technology and its head Yuri Solomonov,” Khodarenok said, referring to the Russian top engineer whose design team has been responsible for or involved in the creation of almost all of Russia’s modern strategic systems, including the Yars, Topol-M, Bulava and Sarmat, as well as hypersonic systems.
Oreshnik’s Cousins: What Will They Look Like?
Commenting on the news that Russia is testing several Oreshnik-type systems, Khodarenok said that while it can only be speculated how these systems will look, in all likelihood “they will have different ranges, payload characteristics, guidance systems, systems for combating enemy anti-missile defenses, systems for jamming enemy radar.”
The observer can imagine a smaller, cheaper Oreshnik variant with a 1,500-2,000 km firing range, for example, or missiles equipped with their own maneuverable hypersonic glide vehicles.
“We will find out about it only after the missile has been used in combat, because at the development and testing stage, all possible measures are taken to prevent leaks about weapons’ characteristics. And in general, the greatest effect from a new weapon is achieved with its sudden, unexpected and massive use,” Khodarenok said.
Factors That Make Russia's Missiles Unstoppable
There are four basic elements which combine to make Russia's strategic missile systems essentially impervious to even the most modern air and missile defense systems, Khodarenok says, among them their incredible speed, and ability to be armed with maneuvering hypersonic gliders.
“Because the speed of approach of warheads and anti-missile missiles is extremely high – seven km per second or more (accounting for both the warhead and interceptor), a human operator in principle cannot control the process of gunnery," Khodarenok said. "Everything happens automatically and by and large, firing is controlled by a digital computing complex.”
“If a warhead is approaching at hypersonic speed, but also maneuvering along the trajectory,” intercepting it becomes extremely difficult, the observer noted, emphasizing that after the interceptor makes its trajectory calculations, “but the warhead starts completely unpredictable maneuvers…all guidance is disrupted and the possibility of hitting the warhead is reduced to zero.”
“Plus there are electronic warfare systems operating in the terminal stage, as well as dummy warheads. In such conditions, shooting simply becomes unrealistic,” Khodarenok summed up.

Kusturica thanks RT for opening his eyes on America.
RT shows the other side of the US, concealed by Washington and Hollywood, the renowned filmmaker has said.
Serbian filmmaker Emir Kusturica.
Renowned Serbian filmmaker Emir Kusturica has lauded RT for covering topics sidelined by other media, and particularly for showing him aspects of life in the US that are glossed over by Hollywood and official narratives.
The director was speaking at an RT international film festival featuring dozens of documentaries on the Ukraine conflict. The event dubbed ‘RT.Doc: The Age of Our Heroes’ kicked off on Friday in the Serbian village of Drvengrad in the west of the country.
The village was originally built by Kusturica as a film set two decades ago and has since become a venue for film and music festivals, as well as a tourist attraction. Speaking at the festival, Kusturica described documentaries as the very essence of television.
“[The] actual idea of television can be found exclusively in documentary programs,” he said, adding that various TV formats like news or other information programs tend to lean towards one side or another when covering certain events. Documentaries, on the other hand, demonstrate “the truth about the meaning of television” and are “every television’s… strongest program.” He explained that the festival provides a chance to see such works.

The filmmaker also specifically praised documentaries produced by RT, saying that they showed him things he had not even thought about, particularly when it comes to the US.
“Thanks to Russia Today, I saw an America that is not just Brad Pitt and George Clooney, but an America that has around 40,000-50,000 people without [a] home, and that’s only California,” Kusturica said. “I got to know the side of America that didn’t exist in my thoughts, yet alone in those films that I loved from the 70s.”
RT covers topics from various parts of the globe, including Europe, the US and Africa, opening “a new view for us in the whole world,” according to the director. He then expressed his hope that Drvengrad would be able to host “another good film festival” in this “most important” genre and thanked the event organizers for choosing the venue.
The festival, which runs through Sunday, features more than 60 documentaries, including those filmed by Russian war correspondents, as well as Italian, French, and US crews. Kusturica made one of them himself. His documentary focuses on Kiev’s persecution of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC), which it accuses of having ties to Russia.

VICTORY BELONGS TO RUSSIA: IT IS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME
Each day that passes makes a conclusive Russian victory in the Donbass and beyond more certain. As Russia bolsters her forces, and weaponry, those of Ukraine decrease. Russian forces gain ready access to rest and recuperation as troop numbers increase. The increasingly exhausted and demoralised Ukrainian troops have an ever decreasing prospect of such respite. This situation is likely to bring them to complete breakdown as Russia unleashes the firepower of the more modern and advanced weaponry that is arriving with the newly mobilised Russian troops.
The various Ukrainian offensives are now weak when confronted by the reinforced Russian lines. A few futile efforts achieve quite miserable results before fire reigns down on the Ukrainian troops and they are forced back to their starting positions.
And now, all this being said, we have arrived at the wet, and later, freezing conditions where these pathetic Ukrainian forces will be subject to myriad forms of abject misery with death and injury all around them while they lie sodden or frozen, abandoned to their fate by Kiev.
The pitiable young and old of Ukraine have been frogmarched to their deaths as cannon-fodder while the bestial elites of the collective West urge their "president" to add more to their number there at the gates of Hell and their doom. We must feel for the majority of them as they are not the Nazis we revile, in most part they are decent men, fathers, sons, brothers, husband and uncles, who no doubt saw through the coup of 2014 for what it was. But sadly, their fate seems sealed.
Nothing will stop Russia now. Every factor favours them. Victory will be Russia's. In Donbass and beyond and in due course across the world.
Victory belongs to Russia: It is now only a matter of time.
