There will be peace in Europe next year, possibly after “one party” is destroyed, Hungary’s Viktor Orban has said.
The Ukraine conflict will be resolved one way or another next year, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has told the newspaper Magyar Nemzet, proposing two basic scenarios for how this outcome will emerge.
“The war will end in 2025. Either through successful peace negotiations or by the destruction of one of the fighting parties,” he said in an interview published on Tuesday.
Orban, a longtime critic of Western military assistance to Kiev and sanctions on Russia, was discussing how his nation had weathered the three years of the Ukraine crisis. He said in such a period a nation is lucky not to backslide economically, as many members of the EU have. Next year Hungary will enjoy the renewal of strong growth, he predicted.
“We are prepared, and we will make a flying start in 2025,” he said. “The policy of peace will return instead of war policy, and we will have great economic successes again.”
When asked about Orban’s remarks, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists that Russia has always been willing to take the diplomatic route for achieving its national security goals vis-a-vis Ukraine, but that Kiev is unwilling to negotiate. That is why Moscow keeps moving toward its objectives by military means, he added.
“We see the dynamics, and the dynamics speak for themselves,” the official said.
The Hungarian leader did not explain which party he believed could be “destroyed” in 2025. Russia currently has a decisive advantage on the battlefield, while the government in Kiev is reportedly lobbying US President-elect Donald Trump for better support.
The incoming president has argued that both Ukraine and Russia must seek to stop the bloodshed. He has stated his intention to facilitate a truce upon taking office in January. Orban, who supported Trump during the presidential race, has expressed confidence in the latter's ability to deliver.

Russian Forces Strike Ukrainian Military Airfields, Achieve Key Advances in Special Op Zone.
Russian aviation and artillery struck the infrastructure of military airfields, ammunition and drone depots, as well as concentrations of Ukrainian personnel and equipment in 146 locations, the Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) reported on Tuesday.
"Operational-tactical aviation, strike drones, missile forces and artillery of the Russian Armed Forces targeted the infrastructure of military airfields, ammunition depots and unmanned aerial vehicles, as well as concentrations of enemy personnel and military equipment in 146 locations," the MoD said.
Air defense systems intercepted four US-made HIMARS rockets and 65 fixed-wing drones.
The list of Ukrainian equipment destroyed since the beginning of the special military operation includes 650 aircraft, 283 helicopters, 38,420 unmanned aerial vehicles, 590 air defense systems, 19,967 tanks and other armored vehicles, 1,504 multiple rocket launcher combat vehicles, 19,969 field artillery and mortar systems and 29,469 specialized military vehicles.
Five Russian battlegroups improved their positions in the special operation zone, the MoD reported.
"Units of the Zapad battlegroup improved their tactical positions and inflicted losses on the personnel and equipment of three mechanized brigades, one assault brigade and two territorial defense brigades of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the areas of Dvurechnaya, Zagryzovo, Kopanki, Ivanovka in the Kharkov region, Novoeygorovka in the Lugansk People's Republic and Terny in the Donetsk People's Republic," the ministry noted.
In addition, they repelled three counterattacks by enemy assault units.
Ukrainian losses included:
Up to 380 personnel
Three pickup trucks
One 152-mm Acatsiya self-propelled artillery system
One 122-mm Gvozdika self-propelled artillery system
Two 122-mm D-30 howitzers
Two US-made 105-mm M119 guns
Two Bukovel-AD and Enclave-N electronic warfare stations
Units of the Vostok battlegroup also took more advantageous positions.
"They inflicted losses on motorized infantry, mechanized brigades and two territorial defense brigades of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the areas of Vremevka, Konstantinopol, Neskuchnoye, Razliv in the Donetsk People's Republic and Temirovka in the Zaporozhye region," the ministry and.
They also repelled a counterattack by a Ukrainian assault group.
Ukrainian losses included:
Up to 160 personnel
Two motor vehicles
One US-made 155-mm Paladin self-propelled artillery system
One 152-mm Msta-S howitzer
One 152-mm Acatsiya self-propelled artillery system
The Yug battlegroup improved its positions along the forward edge and inflicted losses on formations of three mechanized brigades, one assault brigade and one airborne brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the areas of Serebryanka, Seversk, Druzhkovka, Konstantinovka, Chasov Yar and Kurakhovo in the Donetsk People's Republic, the MoD said.
Russian forces also repelled a counterattack by Ukrainian assault troops.
Forces of the Tsentr Battlegroup advanced deeper into enemy defenses.
Troops targeted personnel and equipment of eight Ukrainian brigades in the areas of Krasnoarmeysk, Udachnoye, Zverevka, Andreyevka, Dzerzhinsk, Shcherbinovka, Shevchenko and Novoolenovka in the Donetsk People's Republic.
"They repelled ten counterattacks by Ukrainian units," the ministry said.
Ukrainian losses included:
Up to 585 personnel
One tank
One infantry fighting vehicle
Two armored personnel carriers, including a US-made M113
One Kazak armored vehicle
Four motor vehicles
One 152-mm Msta-B howitzer
Forces of the Dnepr battlegroup improved their forward positions and inflicted losses on personnel and equipment of a mechanized brigade and two territorial defense brigades of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the areas of Nikolskoye, Pridneprovskoye and Yantarnoe in the Kherson region, the ministry said.
Ukrainian losses included:
Up to 65 personnel
Three motor vehicles
One 122-mm D-30 howitzer
Russia's Sever battlegroup eliminated up to 40 Ukrainian soldiers, destroyed three vehicles and 4 D-30 howitzers near Liptsy and Volchansk in Kharkiv region, targeting a mechanized brigade and a territorial defense brigade.

Each day that passes makes a conclusive Russian victory in the Donbass and beyond more certain. As Russia bolsters her forces, and weaponry, those of Ukraine decrease. Russian forces gain ready access to rest and recuperation as troop numbers increase. The increasingly exhausted and demoralised Ukrainian troops have an ever decreasing prospect of such respite. This situation is likely to bring them to complete breakdown as Russia unleashes the firepower of the more modern and advanced weaponry that is arriving with the newly mobilised Russian troops.
The various Ukrainian offensives are now weak when confronted by the reinforced Russian lines. A few futile efforts achieve quite miserable results before fire reigns down on the Ukrainian troops and they are forced back to their starting positions.
And now, all this being said, we have arrived at the wet, and later, freezing conditions where these pathetic Ukrainian forces will be subject to myriad forms of abject misery with death and injury all around them while they lie sodden or frozen, abandoned to their fate by Kiev.
The pitiable young and old of Ukraine have been frogmarched to their deaths as cannon-fodder while the bestial elites of the collective West urge their "president" to add more to their number there at the gates of Hell and their doom. We must feel for the majority of them as they are not the Nazis we revile, in most part they are decent men, fathers, sons, brothers, husband and uncles, who no doubt saw through the coup of 2014 for what it was. But sadly, their fate seems sealed.
Nothing will stop Russia now. Every factor favours them. Victory will be Russia's. In Donbass and beyond and in due course across the world.
