AMERICA FIRST... AND DEVIL TAKE THE HINDMOST?
Do Americans realize if they are in a job easily automated it is quite certain they will lose that job within a few years? It’s looks like the only way the USA can break even never mind make a profit.
Donald Trump appears willing to do whatever is necessary to ensure the USA gets what it needs and wants no matter what law he has to break, what economy he has to destroy and what, already relatively weak nations he has to impoverish, to achieve these goals. Is this simply naked aggression fueled by unquenchable greed and lust for power, or is it because the USA itself is inherently weak? Due to its colossal national debt and, more crucially perhaps, because the trajectory it is on is economically unsustainable is this driving those behind Trump in a desperate effort merely to keep the United States afloat? And if drastic measures are taken to keep the USA competitive through large scale automation, robotics and A.I. what will these efforts bring but unemployment and unrest?
Some will say that overweening greed to have ever more of everything is the reason Trump is doing what he is doing in blackmailing half the world with tariffs and the threat of military attack. Others will say it is simply Trump’s hyper-egotistical, narcissistic megalomania that is at the root of this renewed aggression, an aggression that was thought to have gone with Bush and Biden exiting the White House. Perhaps it is all of this and more. Trump believes he should be obeyed at all times due to his self-acclaimed “genius”and if he get obedience and is opposed then that person, or nation, is made to be sorry. But it surely goes deeper than this.
The USA is in turmoil. Trump’s extremist policies, exemplified by his Gestapo-like ICE agents are ensuring this can only get worse as his presidency wears on. His economics policies including tariffs which he says are bringing affluence and low prices that have never been seen previously are more likely to bring a level of ruin unthinkable in recent times. Americans are suffering from price inflation particularly on food items that strips away wages that are nowhere near keeping pace. At best he appears to have created several bubble which seem certain to burst. The relatively sudden GDP growth recently seen is likely to be a purely temporary phenomenon caused by an overheated economy. The rapid rise of the U.S. stock market since his inauguration seems mainly reliant upon AI, seen by many to be a bubble that will pop sooner or later.
As some of the 0.1% rich become ever richer in the U.S. an increasing number of households are becoming ever poorer due to the extremely high price of their grocery bills. Food costs were up 3% by the end of 2025 while average hourly earnings rose only 1.1%. The weekly shop has become a nightmare for many due to the increasingly difficult decisions to be made on how to earn enough to cover all costs and still be able to eat healthily. Buying less expensive, low-nutrition foods to cut will inevitably mean less healthy people and a greater dependency on an already extremely expensive health care system. Dropping visits to doctors and dentists to save costs will also then lead to further problems within a cycle of despair.
It appears that increasing automation through robotics and AI are being seen by U.S. elites as the way to reduce labor costs and therefore manage to remain competitive with overseas manufacturers whose labor costs are far lower. This may well occur, but what does it mean for employment within the USA if the only way for manufacturing to survive in the USA is to automate? And if mass unemployment becomes the norm in the USA the discontent we see on the streets of America today may seem as nothing compared to the potential for everyday unrest in the future.
Google AI:
Reports from the McKinsey Global Institute have suggested that up to one-third of U.S. workers could be displaced by 2030 if automation adoption is rapid.
U.S. companies who are involved within the manufacturing sector have a huge incentive to automate due to the far lower labor costs abroad, particularly in China.
Google AI:
The disparity in “all-in” employee costs remains a primary hurdle for U.S. competitiveness in labor-intensive industries:
Annual Costs: Average all-in manufacturing employee costs in the U.S. range from $80,000 to $100,000, compared to $15,000 to $20,000 in China.
Unit Labor Costs: Chinese unit labor costs are estimated to be approximately 25% to 40% of those in the U.S.
Overall Price Gap: Despite rising wages in China, its manufacturing costs for many goods are still 50% to 60% lower than in the West.
Meanwhile, as the various bubbles within the U.S. expand ready to burst Trump is threatening every nation he can to cut deals with the U.S. that benefits only the U.S. He appears intent on making sure by all means possible that the USA wins out no matter what it takes. And no matter the harm done to the populations of other nations. He seems to have the attitude that the strong always has the right to dominate and exploit the weak, the typical self-justification of bullies everywhere. Might is right in other words. What’s mine is mine and what’s yours is mine also. But the question remains, is this an indicator of real and abiding strength or is it in truth a manifestation of a weakness within the economic reality of the USA that is beginning to kill it, the signs being already there for those with eyes to see?
As Jon Stewart recently jokingly asked on his ‘The Daily Show’... “Are we broke?”
