Though every effort has been made across the western mainstream to negate the fact, the stone cold reality of violent, extremist power over the Ukrainian authorities is hopefully now clearer to independent, enquiring minds.
It did not and still does not suit the aims and ambitions of western governments that this be so, yet it is so and if I am right it is becoming a better known fact by the day.
These extremist forces, willing to do almost anything in aid of their cause were instrumental during the successful insurrection against the then president and government of Ukraine in late 2013 ending in the first few months of 2014.
The deposed president and government were elected with the overall approval of independent electoral inspectors and so had a democratic mandate to see out their terms of office. This however, was not to be.
Western politicians, chiefly in the USA found reasons to justify the ultra-violence brought about by the influx of extremist elements on Kiev’s Maidan which ultimately proved crucial. Ukrainian reports by those active on Maidan seen by myself at the time relate how the initial protesters who were indeed peaceful began to be replaced by the hard core militants who were not above using violence to assert their authority over those earlier ‘everyday non-violent protesters’.
The violence seen in Kiev at that time, with every possible weapon used from improvised medieval-looking clubs with metal inserts and attachments, toxic sprays, heavy metal chains, Molotov cocktails, Hand guns, hunting rifles and even at one point a fork lift truck, made Maidan Square resemble a war zone.
Those who essentially won victory over the Ukrainian authorities at that time were naturally lauded in heroic terms. Though over 15 lightly armed, mostly young policemen had died the emphasis was on the much larger number of protesters who had met their end on the square. The fact that the vast majority, killed over the period of a single day that brought about the end of the Ukrainian authorities of that time was a false flag operation was not revealed for some years after the grisly occurrence and self-inflicted atrocity. Even now this receives zero exposure in the West.
But the main aspect I wish to emphasise is the crucial influence of the ultra-violent elements who were crucial and who bathed in the “glory” of their victory and whose methodologies were completely glossed over in favour of an almost absolute sanctioning of all the extremes of violence seen by western commentators and politicians.
Ukraine was now to be firmly in the western orbit and that, quite clearly, was all that mattered.
Several of the political hierarchy of the most extreme Ukrainian political party, once known as the Social Nationalist Party, that became ‘Svoboda’ (Freedom) and whose leader was fond of giving the Hitler salute, were given high governmental positions. The die was cast and proceedings took a distinctly radical colouring within governmental policy from that moment on... all with full approval from the western political elites. The Russian language was to be downgraded as one of the very first decisions made in the new, rearranged Ukrainian parliament, the Rada.
Even in the early days of the new, largely U.S.-picked government the extremists who had effectively brought about the demise of the previous president and government began talking of bringing down the new authorities in a second Maidan protest. This did not transpire however, the huge threat which these ultra-extremist elements posed cannot be overstated. You need only imagine the anxieties of those members of the Rada concerning them when they saw their fellow members being taken from the street and thrown into rubbish dumpsters by them (a very common occurrence at the time) when their words met with disapproval by those success-imbued extremists observing from outside.
At this time the so-called ‘Volunteer Battalions’ were formed. These were (and are) composed of the most extreme of the extreme, heavily armed and very many of them having as their inspiration the world war II activities of Ukrainian nationalists who formed Nazi battalions with the view that Hitler’s forces could aid in gaining sovereignty for Ukraine and end what they saw as the wholly pernicious influence of Russia.
The actual Ukrainian military had suffered from a diminution in its professionalism and numbers over many years and the new Ukrainian authorities saw the fervent dedication of the volunteer battalions (financed by Ukrainian oligarchs) as a very useful addition to the forces now required to subdue and eliminate the response to the events of Maidan in eastern Ukraine and the calls for autonomy heard there.
The extremist elements, now heavily armed, uniformed and accepted as part of the new Ukrainian state were again instrumental, this time in the totally unconscionable attacks which now took place against all inhabitants of the autonomy-seeking region of the Donbass. The people living their had long been pejoratively termed ‘Moskals’ (Russian) considered as traitors to Ukraine by the most extreme elements within western Ukraine. Now they had deigned to add to this crime by seeking to run their own region and reinforce the culture, language and loyalties that made them hate objects to those of western Ukraine who now came to deal with them.
The result of this process is well known to many but was hardly a subject of conversation and almost zero reporting by the mainstream news entities of the West. It didn’t at all suit the narratives concerning what had occurred to transform Ukraine into a state firmly within the western orbit. A disparate variety of those intent on killing as many ‘Moskals’ as possible of any age whatever descended upon the Donbass region, set up their mortars and fired at random into urban conurbations. All were traitors to Ukraine; old and young, men, women and children. What need was there for precise targets when 100% of the residents were “Russians”?
The mortar shells simply hit the first solid object in their path. This was often a high rise apartment block but could also be a hospital block or school. Those that failed to find one of these would land on urban streets, town centres and the humble single-storey homes across the villages, towns and cities of the Donbass and in particular of the regions of Donetsk and Lugansk. The worst of this occurred in the years 2014 and 2015 and it was not only the militias or radical individuals who were responsible for the ever-rising toll of civilian deaths.
In due course the volunteer battalions became assimilated into the Ukrainian military and National Guard. That is not to say that many who held the same opinions and believed fervently in the various myths concerning the Nazis and the “benefits” they brought to Ukraine were not already within the Ukrainian military in large numbers.
Hopefully, if you were not already aware of the power of these extreme elements you are beginning to realise what this all portends regarding who really holds the reins of power in Ukraine and subsequently why Vladimir Putin, after eight years where peaceful resolution to the nightmare in the Donbass was at an impasse, made his eventual, fateful decision.
The true power in Ukraine lies not with the politicians, not even with the oligarchs who fund their campaigns, it lies with the enormous level of very real threat that the extreme forces outside the Ukrainian parliament wield. The combination of absolute belief in their views, a willingness to do absolutely anything for their cause and the capacity to inflict levels of death and destruction on those opposing them, from whatever quarter, should be obvious at this point.
And then along came Zelensky, voted to the position of president by a Ukrainian population who had, had enough of the violence and enmity in the east. To his credit Zelensky swore he would fulfil their wishes. However, when confronted with the power of the tooled-up extremists within and outside the Ukrainian military this soon became nothing more than a pipe-dream.
Zelensky was told in no uncertain terms that no way were the ‘Russians’ of the Donbass going to get autonomy and further there was no way that Russian was going to have a place in the Ukraine to come. A visit by Zelensky to the conflict zone must certainly have ended any illusions he had that any movement toward a peaceful resolution in the Donbass that eventuated in greater self-governance there would be for a moment allowed by the Nazi-legacy extremists he encountered there.
I am in no doubt that Zelensky was told that he and his entire family would immediately disappear from earthly existence if he in any way progressed his totally unacceptable ideas for achieving peace and reconciliation in the Donbass. The view of the militants was, and was always, that only the extermination of the ‘Moskals’, the ‘Russians’as they saw them was the ONLY acceptable “solution” there. This is the reason why Vladimir Putin in recent months used the term genocide as this very certainly was the aim of these overwhelmingly powerful forces within Ukraine, forces that have an absolute de facto veto over ALL political decisions regarding matters relating to Ukraine nationalism and those that oppose their ultimate goals of a political and social monoculture there.
None of the above was seen as helpful regarding western goals, narratives, agendas or talking points among western political and media elites. I watched in rising horror as this, what I call a ‘vacuum flask war’ was waged against a civilian population who were not only denied their democratic rights by the events on Maidan Square but who were now to be stripped of their rights to their language, their cultural allegiances and till them very positive relationship to their Russian friends and in-laws and those just across a very open border in Russia. And in addition of course, they knew very well what the now all-powerful and ultra-violent, ideologically-fervent well-armed extremists of western Ukraine meant as their ultimate fate.
The West as a whole, in regard to its political and media elites, has been guilty of an entire range of wholly callous decisions in regard to the people of eastern Ukraine. Knowing full well of their plight and the extreme danger they faced to all they held dear, they not only did nothing to help them (totally out of the question due to their overwheming focus on keeping ALL Ukraine tied firmly to the West) they watched as they were pummeled day and night with civilians dying in ever-greater numbers, while keeping these occurrences wholly out of view in the western world generally. In effect they gagged the dying screams of innocent civilians regardless of age. I saw many traumatising images at that time before almost every social media platform banned them from display. An old man, walking home, now lying dead at the side of the street, a young kid of around twelve lying on a mortuary slab with clear shrapnel wounds on his torso, mown down while playing football in his scool playground, a young girl carried in the arms of a neighbour whose face told the whole story of his own personal hell in taking her lifeless body to her parents. Hundreds of images like this. Grisly, unconscionable events of multiple deaths in everyday streets and town centres. Lives brought to premature ends in the most horrific of circumstances. Image after image and an absolute zero of coverage anywhere in the western news media mainstream.
This is why I support the end of the Nazi-mentality hold that the ultra-nationalists, the ultra-extremist radicals of Ukraine have over any important pathway toward peace in Ukraine and the total barrier they represent to anything that might bring the horror that exists in Ukraine to an end. With Zelensky a pawn in their hands, making an extreme right turn a year or so into his presidency Putin could see that an extremely bad situation ruled by the threat of absolute violence was only going to get worse and that all efforts via the Minsk Accords were in vain. He had hoped for a change of heart in Ukraine for seven long years. He had gone more than the extra mile, many, many more than this. But ultimately, with Zelensky more and more calling for a military solution, calling for Ukraine to regain its nuclear status and moving Ukraine ever closer to becoming a de facto NATO state he could see who was REALLY in power in Ukraine. Those who had won the ‘war’ on Kiev’s Maidan were now in full control in what was imminently to be a war against those seeking autonomy from them in the Donbass.
There was no longer even the slightest hope that the path to peace, reconciliation and the promised ‘special status’ of the Donbass would EVER be realised. Those TRULY in power would NEVER allow any of that and were in fact poised to deliver their ‘final solution’ to those there reviled, loathed and fervently hated in the Donbass.
Putin was left with only bad choices ultimately. And, to save the people who looked to Russia for protection he took the least bad of these even though his instincts, demonstrated by seven long years hoping that Minsk would be honoured by Kiev, were always to preserve life and seek agreement. In the end he made his fateful decision, a decision we all await a conclusion to and the end of the veto that the most violent of forces has over the moderate majority in Ukraine.
