WILL AN IMPOVERISHED, INDEBTED WEST RAPE THE REST OF THE WORLD TO SURVIVE?
Great powers don't shrink from overruling whatever laws and regulations have been put in place to limit them when the basis of their power is threatened. Little fish are then at risk of being eaten...
It is extremely difficult, and may well be impossible to mentally encompass the overarching motivations we are now seeing play out globally. Not surprising of course as the full explanation is certain to be far more complex and beyond anything approaching easy understanding. Perhaps Prof. John J. Mearsheimer will write a book attempting to get to the basic reasons. If anyone is capable of doing so it is he. Until then we can only speculate about the underlying factors at play.
What might be the best guesses as to the factors driving the increasing madness and reckless behavior we see across the political elites of the western world today?
Until now there were four clear and key factors involved in generating the times we are now living through:
1) the combination of the 9/11 events and the need they then precipitated;
2) namely to undermine and remove all identified threats (individuals and regimes) to the USA/West and so maintain western power and influence;
3) plus, in light of 9/11, for the USA/West to obtain universal global surveillance to discover and eliminate all emerging threats, and;
4) to realize the elimination of all barriers (individuals/regimes) standing in the way of achieving 3) above.
5) In addition to the four factors above there has been the general decline of western power and influence by comparison with the increase in power of the east, i.e. the rise of a multipolar world.
There is also quite clearly now, a fifth important factor, the unsustainable national debt levels of the U.S./West in combination with a huge, decades long, reduction in manufacturing and its increasing failure to be competitive on the world market.
With manufacturing declining there has been a move toward reliance on financial institutions and on a strong dollar. Manufacturing has only continued to boom consistently in the arms industry during the regime change era, now continuing again under Trump. (The need to keep at least this sector going may explain to a limited degree why regime change has quite suddenly become U.S. policy once more.)
All European nations are deeply in debt as is of course the U.S.A. This is the fifth factor fueling what we see occurring now. Now the rules of international law and the United Nations charter are being abandoned with a view to plundering the wealth of other nations by circumventing any rights they may claim to sovereignty.
Largely having lost manufacturing to China and others in the global south (and with Europe having now lost cheap Russian energy to keep what it has left still running) has, at least partially, led to the reckless policies we can see being promoted and actively worked on now. Not simply the aggressively warmongering Trump administration policies but also the seeming mania for war within Europe.
The interlinked debt and poor economical factors, the descending power of the dollar and the diminishing cost-to-profit ratio of the western manufacturing, are underpinning, at least in part desperate moves to shore up the West’s economic power which it has, until now, used to dominate the world. This fifth factor explaining the dire situation we are all in now appears to have taken precedence over the first four factors listed above.
Both the USA and Europe are looking ever weaker. They are fast losing any competitive edge they once enjoyed others. Their ability to dominate is vanishing. They are now attempting to reassert their dominance through an increasingly reckless and blatantly lawless policies of threat, attack and plunder against a series of weaker nations.
If this is so, we are witnessing an ongoing world war that can easily outdo in destructive power, disruption of long agreed norms, and the disastrous emergence of long-term destabilizing consequences, of any world war seen previously.
And we will be told lies about all this right to the bitter end…
