You may recall that several months ago Russia issued a stern warning to Kiev that if it persisted in targeting locations within Russia it would begin targeting control and decision-making centres within Ukraine.
I think I would support all of Putin's moves on this conflict except going nuclear unprovoked... or maybe even provoked. In my opinion, neither Ukraine nor even the whole of Europe are enemies worth of such catastrophic measure. They do not pose an existential threat to Russia and the use of nukes would be I think unjustified. If I am to perish by gamma radiation, I would like to believe in Putin until my last day.
I strongly believe it won't come to a nuclear conflagration. But if one thing leads to another to an extent where a last gasp effort to save what is considered to be the very nation itself on one side or another it can't be wholly ruled out either. I am sure the issue of Ukraine WILL indeed be resolved without any use of nuclear weapons thank goodness.
